تربَّى منذ صغره على حب (الرماية)، ودخل في دين الإسلام وكان عمره وقتئذ 17 سنة تقريبا، وعندما اشتد عوده كان الرامي الأول بين أشجع وأمهر الفرسان وقتها، وهو الوحيد الذي افتداه الرسول- عليه الصلاة والسلام- بأبويه وكان هذا يوم معركة (أحد)، حيث كان سعد إذا رمى عدوا أصابه، وهذا لدعاء النبي- عليه الصلاة والسلام- له: "اللهم سدد رميته وأجب دعوته"، كما أن (سعد بن أبي وقاص) أحد المبشرين بالجنة.
He was brought up from a young age on the love of (archery), and he entered into the religion of Islam. He was then about 17 years old, and when his return became stronger, he was the first archer among the bravest and most skilled knights at the time. Where Saad, if he shot an enemy, hit him, and this is due to the supplication of the Prophet - may God’s prayers and peace be upon him - for him: “Oh God, direct his shot and answer his call.” And (Saad bin Abi Waqqas) is one of the glad tidings of Paradise.
